General Motor Corporation still undecided on its official local dealer
The appointed dealer must be able to clean up the Chevy mess

General Motor Corporation is still to make up its mind on who to take over its franchise dealership in Namibia. The companys decision could transform the Namibian automobile industry. In line for the dealership license is a black economic empowerment group, Namib Motors, who if successful would be the first black owned automobile dealer in the country. The group has already started formal negotiations with Barden International to take over operations here. The other known Namibian applicant is Auas Delta, currently the official dealers in vehicles of the then Delta Motor Corporation, who is now effectively the General Motor Corporation (GMC). The name was changed after GMC bought a controlling stake in Delta Motors late last year.
The decision by GMC will also determine, according to information obtained, the dealer to clean up the Chevrolet-Police mess, currently a hot issue that has, on numerous occasions, been raised by lawmakers in the National Assembly. It appears GMC would want to straighten their strained relationship and reputation with the government, which some blames on a lack of communication between Barden International and the government.
Both applicants said they are still waiting for the verdict by GMC South Africa. Namib Motors expects GMCs Franchise Development Department to simply transfer the dealer franchise license from Barden to them. The BEE group reasons that, if successful, they will have to take over the infrastructure of Barden International and will retain the workers both at Oshakati and Windhoek premises.
Auas Delta, on the other hand are most probably counting on their current relationship with the then DMC now GMC. Senior managers at GMC have had earlier hinted to be favouring Auas Delta as the company already have the infrastructure.
It is understood that because of the smaller size of the Namibian market, Auas Delta could convert the current showroom into “a common showroom” for both Isuzu and Chevrolet vehicles but with “a separate customer interface.” They were also destined to be appointed as caretaker service providers until an official announcement has been made. Such information was dismissed by GMC because they said the person who gave them was not supposed to talk to the media without authorisation from Robert Tanzola vice president for Africa, Latin America and Middle East in Detroit, USA.
Attempts to get comment from GMC executives in South Africa were fruitless although messages were left for the senior manager responsible for Namibia. Further Tanzola, who paid a courtesy call on Namibian Prime Minister, Theo-Ben Gurirab, could not be reached for comment in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
